Babywearing in summer: tips for carrying your baby in hot weather

Babywearing in the heat: Tops for keeping cool whilst babywearing in warm weather

Babywearing is a wonderful way to nurture your baby's need for closeness while giving you the freedom to move through daily life.

But when the weather heats up, many parents and caregivers wonder: can you still babywear safely and comfortably in the summer months?

The good news is — yes, you absolutely can. With a few smart adjustments, you can continue to enjoy all the benefits of carrying your baby, even on the hottest days.

Here are CubCare’s expert tips for safe, comfortable babywearing in the heat.

Choose the right baby carrier for summer.

When it’s warm, the material and style of your carrier matters more than ever.

Look for slings and carriers made from breathable, lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton, or mesh. These natural materials allow better airflow and help prevent overheating.

Your padded buckle carrier? It might not be the best option in the heat! Extra padding = extra heat.

Options like ring slings, meh dais, and soft-structured carriers with mesh panels are ideal choices for summer babywearing.

If you're unsure which carrier might suit you best, our Welwyn Slings service offers hire options and friendly expert advice to help you find a perfect fit.

Dress for the temperature when babywearing - light layers are best

Remember, the sling or carrier acts as an extra layer of clothing for your baby.

On hot days, dress your baby in one light layer made from breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo. Caregivers should also wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing to stay comfortable.

For younger babies, it’s often better to protect delicate skin with light clothing and shade, rather than relying on sunscreen. Loose fitting trousers, a large muslin cloth tucked into the side of a wrap or carrier and floating freely over baby's back and legs, a wide-brimmed hat, a UV umbrella or parasol, or simply choosing shady spots can all help.

Less really can be more when it comes to staying cool and comfortable.

Stay hydrated when babywearing in warm weather

Babywearing can make you feel warmer and thirstier than you expect.

Ensure both you and your baby are getting enough fluids.

Offer regular feeds — whether breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or offering water if your baby is old enough — and keep a water bottle close at hand for yourself too.

Hydration supports temperature regulation and helps you both stay energised and well.

Plan outings carefully - and take regular breaks

The sun is strongest between 11am and 3pm, so where possible, plan your outdoor time for earlier in the morning or later in the evening.

Seek out shaded areas such as parks, woodland paths, or covered walkways to keep cool while babywearing.

Importantly, take regular breaks. Rest in the shade, remove your baby from the sling if possible, and allow them some floor time.

If you're using a sling or wrap, it can double as a soft, breathable mat for your baby to stretch out and cool off safely.

Even just a few minutes of tummy time, lying down, or gentle movement can refresh both of you before carrying on.

And remember — using a buggy or pram now and then can be part of a flexible, responsive approach. Sometimes swapping to a buggy for a stretch gives both you and your baby a chance to cool off, reset, and enjoy the journey more comfortably.

Babywearing isn’t about endurance. It's about connection, adaptability, and responding to what you both need in the moment.

Cooling techniques for babywearing in warm weather

There are plenty of little tricks that make a big difference when babywearing in the heat:

Place a damp muslin cloth between you and your baby to help draw away heat.

Carry a small spray bottle filled with water to mist your baby (and yourself) for an instant cool-down.

Dampen your baby's sun hat slightly to help keep them feeling refreshed.

Simple adaptations like these can help you both stay cooler and more comfortable.

Look out for signs of overheating when babywearing in warm weather

Babies are less able to regulate their body temperature than adults.

Watch for signs of overheating, including:

Flushed cheeks

Rapid breathing

Damp skin, particularly at the back of the neck

Fussiness or unusual sleepiness

If you notice any of these signs, stop, find shade, remove excess layers, offer fluids, and take a longer break to cool down.

Responding quickly helps prevent discomfort and keeps babywearing safe and enjoyable.

Stay flexible when babywearing in the summer months

Some days, babywearing in the heat will feel effortless. Other days, it won’t — and that's completely normal.

Alternating between carrying, floor play, and using a buggy when needed keeps both you and your baby comfortable, regulated, and happy.

The heart of babywearing is about connection — and connection thrives when we adapt with care and confidence.
