Introduction to Antenatal Education – labour and birth overview

Huge congratulations!

You are either here because you’re expecting a baby and you want to understand what you need to know for labour and birth, or you want to get a feel for me before committing to our unique, ground-breaking antenatal courses!

What an amazing thing! There is so much you can do, to make the pregnancy and birth an amazing experience.

Some knowledge and preparation can make birth, and welcoming a new baby a really positive experience.

So often, lack of decent antenatal education leaves you feeling disempowered and under prepared. But you are completely in charge of your pregnancy and birth.

Watch our introduction to antenatal education webinar, our labour and birth overview – to start your antenatal education journey.

Tip 1 for labour and birth

Do your research – don’t assume that the most common place of birth, medical path or even the first antenatal classes that come up on Google are right for you. You don't HAVE to go to the hospital to give birth.

Learn about the process of labour and delivery – understand what different stages look like, what might be offered or suggested, and get knowledgeable about medical necessity versus “policy”. They are two very different things and you don't need to agree to anything you aren't comfortable with.

During labour is not the time for learning about an induction, or an instrumental delivery – get fully informed and make your decisions ahead of time. Yes, things might change – but that’s why you’ll have a plan A, B, C and maybe even a plan D!

Attend antenatal classes. Do your research into Antenatal classes…being told the medical process without being given tools to help, and even help avoid certain things is not a good antenatal class…

Tip 2 for labour and birth

Learn about birth.

Learn about the complex interplay between hormones, and how to override things that might crop up to ruin this balance. Understand how your body plays a really important role – and modern day life is often making things really difficult.

Knowing this, and practicing simple moves can make a huge difference.

Stress hormones play havoc with birth hormones – and we want to keep birth hormones flowing.

Learn the three main principles for preparing for birth – you’ll find them in the video.

Get your birth partner on board and get them to understand how important their job is (we have a whole eBook, and an antenatal class on their job!)You are completely capable of birthing your baby – doing it your way. The medical world is there to help if things need a little help. But you are more than capable, given the right tools and preparation.

Tip 3 for labour and birth

Everything is your choice. And every choice has a consequence. Not necessarily a bad consequence, but it will impact your pregnancy or birth journey in one way or another.

So you really need to take notice of the first two tips and learn as much as you can. And make a plan for any decisions you might face.

It's absolutely fine to accept all the interventions and all the drugs offered - as long as you understand what that means. It could be a higher chance of c-section, it could mean a higher chance of a longer labour.

But also know that BECAUSE you know about the choices and the consequences, you can make decisions, and do things to help lower the increased chances of x, y, z happening.

For example, you decide you want to get an epidural as soon as possible during you labour but you know that it could slow things down if you can't move around, and increase your chance of an instrumental delivery. So you spend time during pregnancy getting your baby and body into the best possible, balanced position to do you best to avoid those things. And during labour you get help to move around as much as you can, and change positions.

You understand birth, you make the decisions you need to in pregnancy, and you mitigate risks.
