You can make a huge difference to the labour and birth process

It wasn’t so long ago that a birth partner would be discouraged from entering the birthing room. A dad-to-be would be waiting outside in the hospital corridor.

But there is a growing body of evidence to show that birth partner support makes a huge difference to the birthing person.

I.e. THEY NEED YOU THERE. AND they need you actively helping and supporting!

And, birth partners want to be there, to help someone at a really vulnerable time – to help them achieve the most amazing thing there is to achieve.

Often (thank film and tv…), a birth partner is portrayed as a useless person sitting in the corner of the room on their phone, or fumbling around not knowing what to do, knocking things over and generally getting in the way.

Or, the birth partner faints at the first sign of any bodily fluid (I do understand this one, it’s more common then you’d think and is a real worry for clients in my experience – and one of the reasons why learning breathing techniques is so useful to keep everyone calm!).

The free eBook will give you an amazing start to being the ultimate birth partner, but here are some extra tips that are always useful to remember.

Tip 1 for being the ultimate birth partner

Tip 1: Know Your Role

Your presence matters, but understanding how to support someone in labour is key.

  • Familiarize yourself with the stages of labour, birthing preferences, and common interventions.

  • Go over the birth plan together and explore different scenarios.

  • Attend antenatal classes to learn practical tools and techniques you can practice together before the big day.

Tip 2: Master the Logistics

Stress hormones can disrupt birth, so keep the environment as calm and organised as possible.

  • Prepare the car, hospital bags, and any necessary supplies well in advance.

  • If planning a home birth, take charge of creating a cozy, supportive space, including temperature, lighting, and necessary equipment.

  • Protect the birthing environment—help it feel safe, private, and calm to encourage birth hormones to flow.

Tip 3: Be the Comfort Expert

Physical and emotional support go a long way in easing discomfort during labour.

  • Offer hugs, massages, and calming encouragement. Practice comfort techniques together during pregnancy.

  • Stay hydrated and keep snacks available for both of you.

  • Use breathing techniques to help reduce stress, keeping yourself and the birthing person grounded.

Tip 4: Look After Yourself

It can be challenging to see your partner in distress, and you need to be in the best possible state to support them.

  • Understand the birth process: Knowing what’s happening during labour can help you stay calm and focused when things get intense.

  • Learn techniques to calm yourself: Practicing your own relaxation and calming techniques can help you stay composed when the situation feels overwhelming.

  • Prepare your body: Labour can be a long physical event for you too. Being able to be a physical support person takes strength, and it takes time to train to be the ultimate birth partner.

  • Keep your energy up: Labour can be long, so make sure you stay nourished and hydrated. Take breaks when you can, and rest when possible.

  • Consider a second support person: If it feels like too much for one person to manage, having another person (like a doula or trusted family member) can help both of you stay supported.
