Description

Aromatherapy for birth

Aromatherapy is an ancient and effective holistic practice that has been taking place for centuries when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. Oils are taken from a variety of plants, herbs, flowers, trees and fruits, with each oil holding different properties. These oils are highly concentrated and contain therapeutic chemicals.

Using aromatherapy for birth is a technique that can work alongside other coping strategies to help promote calm, reduce nausea or provide a boost of energy. Scent can trigger memory receptors in the brain, which can invoke a pleasurable or difficult memory depending on the scent. Using calming and familiar scents in labour and birth can therefore boost your ability to remain calm.

Researchers think that aromatherapy might work by exposing the limbic system in your brain to molecules that stimulate that system. The limbic system is the part of the brain that’s responsible for emotions and memories. By stimulating that part of the brain, it’s thought that the aromatherapy may decrease anxiety and tension which would then lead to a decrease in pain perception.

We know from using hypnobirthing techniques in our Daisy Birthing or Parent classes that remaining calm reduces tension, which then inhibits the body’s production of adrenaline, relaxing muscles and allowing the conscious brain to switch off. This in turn allows the labour and birth hormones to work effectively. Aromatherapy can help with reducing tension and remaining calm, thus allowing your body to do the work that it needs to with less restriction.
